“What actually happened is that the renowned scientist Professor John Turkivich and I were working together on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance at Princeton University and we visited General Electric management in Skaneateles, New York to report on the project. General Electric management did not like the name of the device we were using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. They felt nuclear terminology would scare away potential users of this ground-breaking new technology, as the name (Nuclear) is closely associated with current weapons of mass destruction and the nuclear bomb. Nevertheless, Professor Turkivich encouraged all of us to be correct and call it what it is…it is not MRI (magnetic Resonance Imaging) but NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance). This is the correct description, and it is not in the public’s interest to be deceived by the experts. General Electric would not change the name (they ignored Einstein’s directive to always use facts), and at the time, I could do nothing about this because General Electric was funding my research as a student. STICK TO THE FACTS!”
